Florida is quietly brutal on tires. Asphalt that hits well over 130°F in summer, afternoon downpours that turn US-19 into a skating rink, and year-round driving with no winter break — your tires work harder here than almost anywhere in the country. For used car owners, a few habits make the difference between tires that last their full life and a blowout on the Suncoast in August.
Check Pressure Monthly — Heat Changes the Math
Tire pressure rises roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree temperature increase, which means Florida tires swing meaningfully between a cool morning and a scorching afternoon. Check pressure monthly, in the morning before driving, against the sticker inside your driver’s door (not the number on the tire’s sidewall — that’s the maximum, not the target). Underinflated tires flex more, build more heat, and heat is what kills tires in this state.
Tread Depth: The Rainy Season Test
Bald-ish tires you might get away with in Arizona will hydroplane in a Pasco County thunderstorm. Use the quarter test: insert a quarter upside down into the tread — if you can see the top of Washington’s head, you’re at or below 4/32″ and it’s time to plan replacement. In Florida’s rain, waiting until the legal minimum of 2/32″ is waiting too long.
Rotate Every 5,000–7,500 Miles
Front tires wear faster (they steer and, on most vehicles, drive), so rotating them evens out wear and effectively buys you thousands of extra miles per set. If you can’t remember your last rotation, tie it to every other oil change and you’ll never miss the window.
Watch for Florida-Specific Warning Signs
Sidewall cracking from constant UV exposure, bulges after hitting one of our famous post-storm potholes, and uneven wear from alignment knocked out by the same — walk around your car once a month and just look. Five seconds of attention catches problems while they’re still cheap.
Buying Used? Read the Tires First
Tires tell you the truth about a used vehicle: uneven wear hints at alignment or suspension issues, mismatched brands suggest corner-cutting, and the DOT date code on the sidewall reveals tires over six years old that may need replacement regardless of tread.
